                         -: Leather sheets/Hides :-

We also supply leather hides,  specially tanned to your specifications and color/thickness. We can supply a wide range of leathers from buff to cow softy and  goat and sheep nappas.  Please e-mail for further information.   We also supply single hides for reinforcing elbows,  knees and the seat of the trousers.  Contrary to most tanners,  we can tan hides in the smallest of quantities so you can embark on trial projects,  if you wish…                                                                                                                          Also as a tailor,  or a costume designer or a small bag manufacturer you can get the leather you require economically and in very small quantities at the same time retaining the option of purchasing the same leather in large quantities for making production runs. Genuine leather is very versatile and no other material can compare to its durability and strength. Much of the quality of genuine leather depends on the type and grain of the leather you choose.

There is no perfect hide. Almost all will have a hole from the hunt, skinning, etc. All #1 hides have been selected for minimal cuts, holes, blemishes, etc, and would be considered jacket quality, large hides. We select for premium full grain leather, but by reversing the leather, or turning the grain side inward, the suede side can be used. We assume you are using the grain unless you request suede.

Some of the leathers available with us:

  • Cow leather
  • Goat leather
  • Sheep leather
  • Calf skin/leather
  • Buffalo leather
  • Lamb skin/leather

Some of the leathers which are commonly available:

 Vegetable –tanned leather:

Vegetable-tanned leather is tanned using tannin (hence the name “tanning”) and other ingredients found in vegetable matter,  tree bark (the bark of the cinchona tree) and other such sources.   Vegetable-tanned leather is supple and brown in color,  with the exact shade depending on the mix of chemicals and the color of the flesh.  Vegetable-tanned leather is not stable in water;  it tends to discolor,  and if left to soak and then dry it will shrink and become less supple and harder.  In hot water it will shrink drastically and plasticize,  becoming rigid and eventually becoming brittle.   However,  the most versatile type of leather is also vegetable tanned leather. The vegetable tanned leather can also be manufactured in oak tree bark.  The benefit of vegetable tanned leather is that it stretches well when soaked in water and it can be carved,  molded,  painted,  dyed,  oiled or waxed.  This proves to be extremely useful in making leather furniture and other articles.   Vegetable tanned leather is available in cowhide, goat,  sheep,  lamb and buff.  The vegetable – tanned leather is available in any color and finish.   Our vegetable tanned leather in any colour,  in any thickness,  in any type of leather is available for US$ 0.35/decimeter or US$ 3.27/square foot.

 Raw Hide:

Rawhide is made by scraping the skin thin, soaking it in lime, and then stretching it while it dries.  Rawhide is stiffer and more brittle than other forms of leather, and is primarily found in uses such as drum heads where it does not need to flex significantly; it is also cut up into cords for use in lacing or stitching, or for making dog toys.  Rawhide leather is available for US$0.30/decimeter or US$ 2.81/square foot delivered anywhere in the world.   Available in cowhide,  goat,  sheep,  lamb and buff.

  Oil-Tanned leather:

Oil tanned leather has a special feature – it is usually the most agile type of leather available.  If you have touched a piece of leather that has a slightly oily surface feel,  it is probably an oil-tanned leather type.  This oily feel of the leather will not rub off on your hand,  but it gives this type of leather a unique and interesting finish.

The cost of the leather is US$0.35/decimeter or US$ 3.27/square foot.

 Chrome-tanned leather:

Chrome-tanned leather, invented in 1858, is tanned using chromium sulfate and other salts of chromium. It is more supple and pliable than vegetable-tanned leather, and does not discolor or lose shape as drastically in water as vegetable-tanned but it cannot be carved or molded. The chrome tanned leather is made soaking the hide in an acidic bath that contains a high level of chromium.  This type of leather can be easily identified by a gray toned edge when it is cut.     More esoteric colors are possible using chrome tanning. leather is available for US$0.35/decimeter or US$ 3.27/square foot  delivered anywhere in the world. Available in cowhide,  goat,  sheep,  lamb and buff.

 Full-grained leather:

Full-Grain leather, made from the finest raw material, are clean natural hides which have not been sanded to remove imperfections. Only the hair has been removed from the full grained leather. In the full grained leather the grain remains in its natural state which will allow the best fiber strength, resulting in greater durability. The natural grain also has natural breathability, resulting in greater comfort. The natural Full-Grain surface will wear better than other leather. Rather than wearing out, the full grained leather will develop a natural "Patina" and grow more beautiful over time. The finest furniture, and footwear, are made from Full Grain leather.   Full grained leather is available for  US$ 0.35/decimeter or US$ 3.27/square foot delivered anywhere in the world. Available in cowhide,  goat,  sheep,  lamb and buff.

 Corrected Grained:

Corrected-Grain leather, also known as Top-Grain leather, is fuzzy on one side and smooth on the other. The smooth side is the side where the hair and natural grain used to be. The corrected grain hides, which are made from inferior quality raw materials, have all of the natural grain sanded off, and an artificial grain applied. Top grain leather generally must be heavily painted to cover up the sanding and stamping process.  Corrected grain leather is available for  US$ 0.35/decimeter or US$ 3.27/square foot delivered anywhere in the world.  Available in cowhide,  goat,  sheep,  lamb and buff.

 Suede leather:

Suede leather is an interior split of the hide. Suede leather is "fuzzy" on both sides. Suede leather is less durable than top-grain leather. Suede leather is cheaper because many pieces of suede leather can be split from a single thickness of hide, whereas only one piece of top-grain can be made. However, manufacturers use a variety of techniques to make suede leather appear to be full-grain. For example, in one process, glue is mixed with one side of the suede leather, which is then pressed through rollers; these flatten and even out one side of the material, giving it the smooth finish and is available for  US$ 0.35/decimeter or US$ 3.25/square foot delivered anywhere in the world. Latigo is one of the trade names for this product. Suede is   available in cowhide,  goat,  sheep,  lamb and buff.

FULL ANILINE LEATHER:

Full aniline leathers are the most attractive and natural leathers which are prized for their soft natural feel. The full aniline leathers are leathers which have been aniline dyed in a vat process with no colour coating added to the surface. The full aniline leathers are the most expensive leathers to produce because only the very best selection of hides can be used to produce full aniline leathers. Full aniline dyed leathers are more susceptible to absorbing liquids because of the natural porosity of the hide. Because full aniline leathers don't have a top coating the leather breathes more easily and is cooler to sit on.  Full Aniline leather is available for US$ .35/decimeter or US$ 3.27/square foot delivered anywhere in the world. Available in cowhide,  goat,  sheep,  lamb and buff.

PULL UP ANILINE  LEATHER:

This is a type of aniline leather (described above) that has an extra top treatment of oil and/or wax effects. The pull up aniline leather or Pull Up leathers are designed to become "distressed" looking through time and use. The properties of pull up aniline leathers are similar to full aniline but in places of heavy use, the oils will be pushed away leaving lighter areas - particularly on the seating areas. Pull up aniline leather will also scratch easily. Leather Master has special products designed to restore the look and feel of Pull Up leathers. Pull up aniline Full Aniline leather is available for US$.35/decimeter or US$ 3.27/square foot delivered anywhere in the world.  Available in cowhide,  goat,  sheep,  lamb and buff.

SEMI-ANILINE  LEATHER:

Semi-Aniline dyed leathers have been both dyed through and have a thin finishing layer on the surface. Semi-aniline leathers offer a combination of the softness and feel of full aniline leather with the protective benefits of a surface finish. By dyeing the semi-aniline leather through before the final thin top coating is applied, a very even colouration is achieved with only a thin layer of finish. Thus thesemi-aniline leather remains softer because it is not necessary to apply a thick top coating.  Semi-Aniline dyed leather and Full Aniline leather is available for US$ .35/decimeter or US$ 3.27/square foot delivered anywhere in the world.  Available in cowhide, goat, sheep, lamb and buff.

PIGMENTED  LEATHER:

The  pigmented leather may be buffed (corrected) to reduce heavy natural scarring and blemishes in the hides. It is then coloured with a coating containing opaque pigments and embossed with a grain pattern to ensure a uniformity of colour and resistance to fading.  Pigmented leather  is available for US$ .35/decimeter or US$ 3.27/square foot delivered anywhere in the world. Available in cowhide, goat, sheep, lamb and buff.

NUBUCK LEATHER:    {Also called - CHAPS, STONEWASHED OR SUEDE LEATHER}

Nubuck leather or chaps, stonewashed leathers are actually aniline leathers where the surface has been brushed, and have created a texture similar to a velvet on leather. Many people confuse this Nubuck leather or chaps/stonewashed leather with suede leather. Suede leather is the flesh side of a piece of leather, and nubuck is an effect that is done to the grain side of the leather. This brushing actually breaks the surface and opens up the leather even more making it incredibly soft. The Nubuck leather is available for US$ .35/decimeter or US$ 3.27/square foot delivered anywhere in the world. Available in cowhide, goat, sheep, lamb and buff.
